The results for midterm #3 have been posted. The results pretty typical in that the scores for midterm #3 are usually somewhat lower than for midterm #2 (i.e. when we first start to study reactions), those for midterm #2 are often a little lower than midterm #1 etc. The scores for this test are significantly lower than last year, however. The mean this year was 119, compared to 130 last year. I am not sure why the mean is 10 points lower this year, I thought that the test was fair and was not too long. Anyway, to compensate for this I have decided to subtract 10 points from each of the points totals required for the various grades, i.e. you will now need only 860 points for an A, 760 for a B, 560 for a C and 390 points for a D, respectively.  More...

To clarify what is "fair game" for the test. Everything up to 1/2 way down page 5 of the stereochemistry notes. You DO need to know all of the alkene reaction on pages 18 - 23 of the problem set, but you don't have to identify whether the reactions give racemic mixtures, products that are optically active etc. (i.e. the red text after each reaction).

REMINDER. There will be THREE review sessions for midterm #2. Chad will hold a concepts-based review session on Friday Oct 16th at 2:00PM in LSA-191. I will hold two problems-based review sessions. The first will be on Thursday evening, 6 - 8PM, now confirmed to be in PS F-173. Unfortunately I need to be out of town this coming Saturday, so my second review will have to be SUNDAY 10AM - Noon, now confirmed to be held in LS A-191. I know that Sunday is not ideal for everyone, but it is the best I can do this time. Both reviews will be recorded. Both reviews will cover different material. Thursday will be mainly cycloalkane conformations, and spectroscopy, and Sunday will be more Spectroscopy and acid/base reactions. Because I will be out of town, there will be no office hours on Saturday.

So far, most of you have not taken advantage of the special extra credit assignment. This is supposed to help you on the next midterm. You need to use your molecular model kit to build a model of cis-1-bromo-3-methylcyclohexane, and demonstrate the chair-to-chair interconversion, and what the consequences are for the substituents upon chair interconversion. You will need to bring your model either to me, or to one of the organic TAs, in office hours, or after one of my review sessions, demonstrate the chair-to-chair interconversion, and you will receive 5 extra credit points. You must complete this by Saturday October 17th. My office hours and times after review sessions will start to get very crowded with people trying to do this at the last minute, so please remember that you can complete this with any organic TA.

OK, some bad news. This class has been scheduled at 7:30AM for many years. I managed to get it switched to a later start for the first time this semester, however, the later start has resulted in scheduling problems with the labs. So, for next semester, Spring 2010, we are going to have to return to a 7:30AM start! Sorry, I tried!

The peak positions for the last question in Quiz #7 are not easy to see, so here is a clarification. The critical peaks are those at the high mass "end", since these represent the molecular ions. There 3 peaks in this region, one is at mass = 242, the second one is twice as large as the first and is at mass = 244, and the third one is the same size as the first and is at mass = 246.  More...

Well, we are a bit behind where we need to be in lecture, and so there are a couple of questions on Quiz #6 that we haven't yet covered in class. So, Questions 4 and 11 are now deleted (submit any answer, everyone who submits a quiz will get 1/2 point for these questions). I have also decided that question #9 is too difficult, considering the fact that we only just covered this material in class today, and I can't have a review session on it because of grading. So, this question also is deleted, enter any answer, you will get 1/2 point. Questions 3 and 8 are on mass spectrometry, but #3 is easy, straight out of the notes, and Question 8 is not hard after you have done a couple of the practice problems that are in the notes (answers on this website, see weekly work page for example). This quiz is still due 11:59PM Saturday, October 3rd.  More...

A little late, apologies, the answer key for Quiz #5 has been posted. I forgot to mention in class today that you are allowed to bring molecular models to the exam on Monday, if it is helpful to you. Some students find it useful to use a model to solve conformation problems and to draw Newman projections. However, do NOT bring your entire model kit! You will spill it all of the floor and you don't have time to build a model in the middle of a test. Bring an already built structure that represents a minimum structure that you can use to solve a problem.

There will be three review sessions for the upcoming test. Chad will hold a more concept-based review on Friday, 9/25, 2:00pm in LSA-191. I will run 2 problem-based reviews. The first of these will be on Thursday, 6 - 8PM, IN BAC 216 (note that this is in the Business School!). The second will be on Saturday, 2 - 4PM in LS A-191.

A word about review sessions. Both Chad and I are happy to do these, there is, however, a potential problem. In fact, I hold fewer review sessions than I used to, because some students have a tendency to come to review sessions instead of studying on their own. It is easy to come to a 2 hour review session and tell yourself that you just spent 2 hours studying organic, when in fact you just spent 2 hours watching Chad or myself work on the board, when you would heave been better off spending that time on your own working problems. Come to review sessions if they help you to understand concepts or how to work problems, but please don't use these review sessions as an excuse to put off working problems on your own, Thanks for listening to that!

In the review session today I did a problem that should help you to do problem #11 on Quiz 4. Please take a look at the recorder review session, click HERE, and specifically go to minute 53:30. There I describe solving a problem that I believe may not be 100% fair to expect you to answer today, but I think you should be in better shape to answer once the midterm comes around. if you submitted your quiz BEFORE getting this hint, then either resubmit it, or let me know that you submitted it early and I will take that into account when grading this quiz.

In class on Wednesday Sept. 16th you will be told about a Chemical Education research project that we will be asking you to participate in. We want to investigate two issues. First, we want to study how your educational and social background influences your performance in organic chemistry. Second, we want to look for correlations in learning among basic concepts in organic. For example, do students who find nomenclature problems easy also find spectroscopy problems to be easy, or does nomenclature correlate better with the ability to solve synthesis problems etc. Your participation is VOLUNTARY and any data we collect from you will be STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. You will gain no credit or class advantage by participating, nor will you lose any credit or advantage by not participating. Obviously we would like as many of you to participate as possible to generate useful statistics. You will be asked to electronically sign a Consent Form to participate each time you take a class quiz. To see a copy of this consent form, click HERE. More details will be provided in class, and you can ask me about this at any time.

Again this week we have been given room SCOB 210 for the review session, i.e. the same room as last week, and NOT our usual classroom. The subject of the review will be structural and stereoisomers and generating isomers from molecular formulae.

There will be a review session tomorrow, Saturday Aug 29th, the subject will be practicing drawing Lewis structures and perhaps some other stuff. After the review session, that should last for ca. 1 hour, I will be available to answer questions in a normal office hour format. I will be recording the reviews session in the same way as the lectures for those who are unable to attend. Review sessions never introduce any new material, they are only used to practice problems. This review session/office hours will NOT be held in our normal lecture room, instead it will be in SCOB 210, i.e. The John W. Schwada Classroom Office Building, which is located to the South of Noble library, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Orange Avenue and McAllister Mall.

Some of you are curious about the Course Compass website package that comes with the textbook. I do not use Course Compass, however, you might find some useful study material there if you would like to explore it. To access the site you ned the following information: Course Name = CHM 233, Fall 2009, Course ID = gould79154. Please don't ask me about how Course Compass works because I am afraid that I don't know!

For the first time in this course, a textbook is NOT required. However, it is highly recommended that you get one! The recommended textbook is Organic Chemistry, 5th Edition by Paula Y. Bruice. If you get the textbook, it is essential that you also get the Solution Manual, since the most important part of any textbook are the practice problems.

This year the textbook is only recommended for several reasons. First, I have a lot of material on my own website, and students tell me that they use the textbook less and less each year. I want to avoid having you buy an expensive textbook that you will not use. Second, you can learn most of what you need to know from just about any organic textbook, they are all quite similar. (One possible exception is pericyclic reactions that are covered in second semester organic, most textbooks have insufficient coverage of these reactions, Bruice is pretty good in this regard). I will provide suggested reading and problems from the 5th Edition of Bruice. I will not be able to suggest reading or problems from any other edition of Bruice, or any other textbook. If you have another edition of Bruice, or even another textbook, it should be easy for you to find the appropriate reading and problems yourself. The Bruice textbook is also available as an "E-book" at reduced cost. The E-book comes with a printable version of the Solutions Manual and provides access to the text online for ONE YEAR only.

I cannot recommend any particular version of the book (paper or electronic), or if you can use another textbook, or even if you need a textbook at all, since different students have very different needs. Some students really need to study from a textbook, for them the book is essential. Some students want a permanent textbook to study for the MCAT exam. You have to make your own decision on this.

Some versions of Bruice come with an online subscription to "Course Compass". I do not use Course Compass, but you may find some useful study material there.

A Molecular Model Kit, is REQUIRED. I recommend the HGS Molecular Structure Model C Set for Organic Chemistry, or the Molecular visions set in the bookstore. I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Prentice Hall kit. The HGS kit is best, the Molecular Visions kit is cheaper but is still OK.

It is not possible for me to give an override into this class since the class size is determined by the room capacity. If you really want to get into this class, come during the first week and be persistent in trying to register online. There will be a lot of drop/add activity during the first week, persistence usually pays off. Alternatively, this class will also be offered as a hybrid class for Fall 2009, see the schedule of classes, CHM 233/LN 88388. The hybrid class will consist of online lectures with students coming to class only to take the midterm tests and the final.
